foreman backlight
#1
i was asked how to install a back light on the foreman, so i thought that i might jsut make a long-winded post out of it. ask any questions that you might have, and good luck! oh, theres a pic of the backlight on my photo page. i'll try to get more pics up if anyone needs them
Well, to start out, pick up a set of those fog lights for a car, whatever style that you like. Then you have to pull the batery out. the lights should come with all the mounting hardware that you need. i had to take the light off of the bracket, then take the bolt in the bracket and reverse it so that the head of the bolt is in the big hole in the botton center of the batery box. the plastic it reely thick there so i'm not worried about it cracking. then slip the little metal bracket up onto the bolt from underneath and put the nut and locwasher on and tighten it good. the lights taht i have had little rubber boots that covered the bracket, but i jsut ditched them, they were jsut a pain to work with. now hook the light to the bracket tight, but not soo tight that you cant adjsut it without loosening it. you can see all of this good in the pic. now time to wire. for the ground i jsut went over to the bolt where the starter is grounded by the recoil. you could go to about anywhere, this is jsut the first spot that i saw and it has worked good. now you need to string the power wire(should come with the kit) from the switch(also should be supplied) to the battery box. this part can be kind of tricky. the foremans main frame has a channel running down the inside of it. there should be a wire that comes from the battery to the switch, and a wire from the switch back to the light. to save some time you can jsut tack the two together with some electrical tape, or stuff it into some split-loom to make it look clean. dont ask me why, i suppose that i dosent matter, but i chose the right side. just infront of the air box you can get down to the frame. it might help to pull that black rubber flap out of the way. just feed the wire in and guide it along the frame rail. theres one or two things that you will have to run the wires through, but they will stay pretty much where you put them. run them clear up to the front of the fraim rail, and then up by the steering stem to the handel bar mounted swich. best to have a lighted swich so you dont forget to turn it off. i posted a pic of how i mounted my swich, i jsut loosened one of the cable ties and looped it over the little tabs on the swich, then i put a zip-tie over the top of the swich. the swich is my only complaint with the system. its not water-proof. i could find a better swich, but i jsut used what came with the lights. if you feel like it you could probably mount the swich in the little balck dash, but i didnt want to do any drilling or cutting. the swich needs its own ground for its light, so i jsut ran a short wire to one of the bolts that holds the bar over the headlight. the instructions that came with the kit should show which wire goes to what on the plug, but you only have 3 options so its not too hard to figure it out. now go back to the battery. the kit that i got was all pre-wired, so i just folded the extra wire, ant ziptied it below the fuse box. it is easier if you unclip the fuse box and tilt it out of the way, because the power wire off of the back light will come throu one of the holes below the fuse box and connect with the wire from the swich. drop the battery back in and conenct the cables and hook the wire that goes to the swich to the positive terminal. the light has its own inline fuse. tuck all the extra wire under the fuze box and snap it back into position. now zip-tie the wires in several spots along the frame to keep them from moving arount too mcuh, and zip-tie them to the handlebar jsut below the swich to keep them from pulling. now you should be done. no cutting or drilling. you could take it back out and never know it was installed. it does look like a much cleaner instalation with the split-loom over the wires, and it also protects the wires. also, some of the lights have lenses designed with a top side, so it might be nesceary to take the lense off the light and rotate it. make sure that it seals back up good so that water dosent get in to it. have fun
