Rubicon at the dunes, set code 9
#1
Took the Ruby to the dunes, had fun climbing crazy stuff in 4low floored hanging with my friends Z400 (until he actually tried)
Anyways, on a few nasty hills the ruby dug in and stalled out halfway up, no problems the first two days until the last day, I was floored in D1 at 40MPH and the winds changed my favorete dune, this time it included a G out and the ruby lost speed so fast (free wheel airborne spin from 40 to 0 in less than a second when it landed) it stalled. Uppon re-starting it flashed the display and stuck itself in 3rd gear- used low range to make the hills and high range to limp back to camp
Pulled the code and its code 9..... removed the battery cable for 5 min and its all up and running fine again. The code 9 is still in there, should I be worried?

Not unless your dash continues to flash when you ride your machine. I don't have access to a manual here, wonder what code 9 is? You can erase the code(s). While the code is being displayed, press both shift buttons at the same time for at least 3 seconds. The memory will store up to two codes and you may have erase each separately.

ive got a manual for my 03' rubi. the code "9" is a ecm voltage converter circuit. turn the ignition off and on and check the gear position indicator. if it doesnt blink, it was a temporary failure. if it blinks ("-") you have a faulty ecm.

hi bud glad it worked . if you want to erase the code push the up and down shift switches simultaneously for 3 seconds or more while the problem codes is being displayed. when the erasure is completed, the blinking pattern changes to the erasure confirmation blink. turn the ignition off. if you have more problems with the resetting of the ecm give me a yell. good luck!!!!!

I'm having the same issue on my 2001. Flashing 9 times indicating "ECM voltage converter circuit" malfunction. In my case the issue occurred right after after the vehicle was operated without a battery on just the dynamo. Likely the result of battery absence causing the voltage to spike >20 VDC. Which Honda included a capacitor to stabilize the rectifier output for those cases when the battery has failed.
I'm etching the ECM potting compound now to see if I can possibly trace the issue and repair it on the PCB.

Fairly sure the voltage reg would stop the voltage from going over 14.5v even without a battery, though running a vehicle with ECUs without a battery is asking for trouble. I don't use starter boosters on ECU equipped machines for that reason. I guess if resetting the code doesn't work, then a fresh ECU would be needed, unless you can fix the existing one, but circuits are usually well potted.
