Default clutch problems

my 87 honda 250x feels as though it needs a new clutch... i don't have any experience in being able to tell if it does need a new clutch, so i'm wondering what are some of the signs that i would need to replace the clutch...thanx for all of your input. also, if i were to take it apart, what are some signs of wear that i would see on the cluth plates, and even clutch basket, incase that needs to be replaced too? thank you in advance for all of your input.

The first sign would be what's called clutch slippage. You'd probably notice it first in higher gears at higher rpm's. You will be able to hear the engine pick up rpm but you won't be able to feel any acceleration. Kinda like hitting neutral almost but without the mechanical noise. Sometimes you can hear it best when you hit a higher gear, the gear goes in solidly, but the engine just revs without any connection to the drive train. It's like you are being lazy with your clutch lever but you're not. As it becomes more severe, it will begin to happen more often. In it's most severe case, you just won't go anywhere. First thing, a sticky or clutch cable adjusted without any play will make your clutch slip. If all that's good, you are pretty safe to assume you need clutch work. You want to fix it soon because it's possible for the fiber to begin to peel off the plates or just fragment. Trust me when I tell you that you don't want that material floating around your engine. It makes a REAL mess.

Another way of telling your clutch has gone bad is if the plates are blue. That means they were slipping and got to hot.
