Get a WhiteBrothers allaround cam I here that hot cams has a clicking sound I'm very satisfied with all my WhiteBrothers parts very good quality. When you do upgrade your cam make sure you get stroger valve springs I suggest R/D chromoly springs the Kibble White springs are pretty much the same as stock ones. I don't know about the xr400 cam I just recently heard about them. Hope this is helpful.

I believe that the 38mm carb on the 04 is a typo. The 400 is plenty carburated with the 35.5. Why would they change the cam, that would cost them money. Hot Cams are not worth the money. I have ridden many quads with Hot Cams stage 1 and 2 and there is not any noticable difference over the factory cam. The XR400R cam seemed to be the best all around cam avalible. It has more power at any given rpm than stock, plus it is just a drop in. The White Bros cam is almost a complete rip off too. I sent my factory cam in to get reground to their specs and when I got it back it was no different than when I sent it out. Luckily my friend had just recently rebuilt his XR400R and wanted more low end power so we swapped cams. He got what he wanted, slightly more power off-idle. I got what I wanted more power practically everywhere except just off-idle. The XR cam is fully recommended.

do not go out and buy one of those new carbs. i haven't heard of anyone actually proving they updated the carbs. however, you can get your carb bored out to a 38mm for $125 from rocky ridge or $175 from sparks racing.
for a new cam, get a stage 1 hotcam or an xr 400 cam. the stage 1 is a little more aggressive. if you are getting a higher compresssion piston, you can even go mroe aggressive than the stage 1.

yes, it is the same part #. that website isn't enough for me to believe it. i talked to my dealer and they said it was the same carb, same part #. then again, i am not saying the dealers know their stuff all the time.

the xr cam will give a little more low end power but the stage 1 will give a little better high end power. i would get the stage 1 but that is just me. you will have plenty of low end power. it will seem like stock but the power band will be more usable. you don't need anything with this cam. you can use stock rockers and springs.
i would probably remove the base gasket under the cylinder and clean the surfaces with acetone and then use the honda high temp sealant with no base gasket. also, i would remove one layer of the 3-layered head gasket. paint both sides of the one layer with high temp paint. then install only the one layered gasket. this will raise your compression so you should probably have more low end power than stock even with one of these mild cams.
