Default OT: (kinda) XR 100R Needs some Help

I just recently picked up a 95' XR100R from my dad. He had the top end
rebuilt right before he put it up. He let the bike sit for around a year,
without turning the fuel off, and there was gas in the carbs. I am not very
good with engine stuff like actually fixing them, but I know what all the
things are, and where they go just not how to set them correctly, especially
on a carbed machine. I pulled the carbs off, and right away I could tell it
was gummy inside. I wrote down all the jet settings as i took them out.
Stuck each part in some carb cleaner, and thought I got them cleaned good,
but apparently not. One of the jets inside where screwed out like the
air-fuel jet was, no spring inside of the jet once taken out, so i dont know
if it is suppose to be or not. Do the jets WITHOUT springs screw all the way
in? I got the carbs put back together, and kicked it over. It started but
ran like crap. I could rack the throttle half way and it would take some
time to idle back down. Later on i discovered a hole in the intake manifold,
could this contribute to the long time for it to idle back down? Well I put
some high temp sealant on it, and it seems to hold. I also pulled the carbs
back apart, and I recleaned the jets. The jet next to the main jet, I could
not blow through, I want to say it is the slow jet? I tried to clean it out
with a needle, and it wont budge. I am also fouling out spark plugs faster
then I can say my name, which means a really rich mixture? Air filter is
new. Also how do I set the air-fuel mixture screw, not the idler? I remember
from when I cleaned my Ninjas carbs, I think I get the bike running good at
a low rpm with the idler, then I just the air-fuel screw until it idles
high, then reset the idler. Like I said this bike was given to me, so it
gives me something to tinker with, so any help would be extemely
appreciated.
Thanks
John

Usually if the bike wont idle down after letting off the throttle means its running lean. So yes a hole in the intake will cause it to lean out a bit, just cuz its letting in more air. Cant really help you with anything else but im sure someone else can, good luck.
