to you guys that own the 450r, were you at all dissapointed with the speed or power. before they came out they were sapose to have 55+hp and they only make 35hp. i was going to trade in my 400 for one but i dont see how it could be possible for the 450 to be faster than my 400 (be sure to look at my mods). i meen, just the pipe i have on my 400 give me the same hp as the 450 pluss i got a few more big hp mods. would i be dissapionted in the power.

 

400ex - introduced 1999 - you upgrade it and spend some serious $$$
its just the new kid on the block - make room for some 21st century improvements on the old machine.
those same mods on thie R - would scare you right off....

all im saying is - hard to convince me that 'essentially' the unchanged 1999 model is better...
those Honda engineers were busy the last few yrs - and I can tell.

 

Actually, the 450r has 37 hp stock. Around 44 w/ hrc kit. The power is incredible

 

I know this is supposed to be for 450R owners but was just curious ... You say that you were making 35hp with just a pipe on your EX?? I didn't think that the pipes gave a HP gain like that without other mods to compliment them .. that's like 10hp gain on just a pipe ??

Anyway .. not flaming on you, just curious if you truly got that kinda gain from just a pipe ..

 

It's not what the max hp is, but AT WHAT RPM THE MAX HP IS MADE! Imagine two engines with the same hp, but one makes it at 5,000 rpm and the other makes it at 9,500 rpm..........get the picture????

The 450 is still making hp, long after the 400 has fallen off the torque curve.

 

I have put a pretty bad beating on every 440ex I have dragged. I am sure there are some really fast ones and all I know is they had the 440 kit. I have the HRC and 13T sprocket so far.

 

I can't compare my 2 quads. The 440 can't see what way my 450 went.

 

440exhondasrock440ex: I know your post was about power and speed. I'm not bashing your EX either, it sounds like a mean machine. The only statement I want to make is that the reason the 450R is a big deal is not just the power. The suspension, chassis and many other components other than the engine are very advanced when compared to other sport quads. Someone who wants to get a "bad" quad without a lot of greenbacks can go get a 450R and have a lot of performance right there, even more so with the HRC kit.

 

FYI the HRC kit does not add 7hp, more like 3-4 tops...

 

No. My friend looked this up on the internet and found dynos which read 6 horsepower, fyi.
