I would recommend a skidplate. There have been postings to this forum discussing what could happen if you don't have one. It seems to me that someone here suggested that the Rancher's wiring is somewhat exposed at the bottom of the bike.
After a skidplate I would invest in a winch.

Get the CV joint boot guards, OXlite makes the best one I have seen, www.oxlite.com then get the belly skid plates
and a fuel filter.. only 1.50
