Oil change on New Rancher
#1
Iam doing the first oil change on my wifes new Rancher ES 2X4 and noticed in the manual it said it would hold 2.1 quarts. After having just changed the oil in my Polaris which stated 2.0 quarts (actually only needed 1.75 quarts) I was weary about just taking the manuals word for it and adding 2.1 in hers. So I put in one full quart and 26 fl oz of the second quart. I cranked it up and let it run and checked it an darn if it seems like that it is too much. I repeated and got the same results. I have since let it set a day and just checked it and it seems high and looks like I will have to drain some out. Better a little under than allot over.
Anyone else had this experience???
Thanks in advance.

Yes.
I put 2.1 qts in my Rancher the first time I changed it as per the manual and it was overfull, and blew back into my airbox. I keep it about halfway between "full" and "add" on the dipstick and it never goes into the airbox anymore.

In the owners manual for the 2X4 it says 2.6 qts. on page 150. On page 110, it says 2.1 qts. I think the 2.6 is the amount you would add after a rebuild, when the engine is completely empty. The 2.1 should be the amount with an oil filter change. And, just like everybody else, I find that 2.1 is quite a bit to much!
I usually add about 1.5, then ride it a little to circulate the oil, then check it and top it up to the high mark.

Mine hold 2 qts perfect....I was wondering about the 2.1 as well, it was a tad high.
BTW Polaris500HO, I didn't know you didn't have to screw the dipstick in to check oil! I guess I just learned something! Thanks!
I was always screwing it in all the way to check, that makes a fairly substantial difference in amount of oil!

Hi Guys
At the shop where I work we don't screw the dip-stick in at all when changing the oil on anything Honda. On most of the Honda Power products there is a decal that shows how to check the oil and that also goes for the Quads and Motorcycles.
