all these companies make shocks for the 400ex. i persoanlly have an elka rear right now but havn't been able to install it since my bike is down. i would get elka's or axis shocks. they are both better than the ohlins from what i read. i would see what you can get a better deal on and go from there.

I run Ohlins on my 250R and I'll admit that Axis and Elkas are a little better but then again they also cost about $500 MORE than my Ohlins. To be honest unless you are a pro rider you will only notice a minimal difference. The Works shocks work fine too but three of my friends have them on their 250R's and for some reason they need to rebuild them more often than other shock brands.

I think for the average rider/racer Elka is the way to go because of the price, availability and performance.
I've owned Works shocks before and even though they are better than stock, the difference is not big enough to justify the cost.
TCS is another low price shock that I am hearing good things about lately.
PEP is a great shock at a good price but the wait is too long.

Personally, I can't justify the over $1,000 price tag of the Elkas and Axis shocks. I'm not denying they are great performers but that is a ridiculous amount of money to spend. The only way I would buy those two shocks are if I was going to run a long travel a-arm set up. TRXROB you look like you have long-travel a-arms from your photos and if you MX race then I can understand why you bought the Axis. But I race XC and on the trail I'm right there with the guys running those high-dollar shocks in the woods.

No I have standard travel hermann arms with PEP ZPS. Everytime I ride them I do a little tuning and they get better.
What I could tell you is that I feel is different is that the next day, I don't feel as beat up as I used to and the cornering is a lot better especially if the turns are bumpy. With my old works triple rates, on soft rough terrain my front end would really plow. Now it grabs and turns. I also don't find myself standing up as much as I used to. Jumps that used to be jarring are almost unnoticable.
