riding smart

Went trail riding last weekend with the boys, had a lot of fun. I had the only utility, other rides were 2 stock z400's, 1 Alba racing outfitted Z400 (loud as hell, I love it), 1 V Force, 2 400EX's, 1 CR125, and 1 KX125. We usually head up to the mountains, and buzz though trails, bouncing over fallen trees, zipping through mud, hill climbing etc.....
The problem is, everyone gets excited and starts driving faster and faster. Soon, we are all battling for who had the biggest *****, and pushing our bikes and skills to the limit. Well, this always seems to lead to diasaster sooner or later. On one particular trail section, we were following a narrow path that snakes around the side of a mountain. It is technical and rocky, with ruts little whoops here and there. We were all riding too dang fast and the leader had to stop quickly. Guess what happened? Some guys lost a tail light and got a few extra dents in pipes. Not good.
After that, we head around a bend that opens up to a extremely steep and long hillclimb up the ridge of another mountain. This "trail" was littered with softball sized rocks and had ruts ranging from 1 to 3 feet deep. Of course, they sent me up first since I had four wheel drive. I was bouncing along, with my backend hopping up and down in first gear, trying to claw my way up this hill. My rear slid into a large rut, popping the front end up, and through some kind of miracle, I didn't flip, but I had to balance my 500 pound bike and drop it back on it's front tires, without letting go of the brakes. One slip and it's 400 feet down. Scary. One 400 Ex and one Z400 started up, didn't lean up over the bars far enough, and flipped over, landing on top of it's rider and bending handlebars as well as damaging plastics. The guys had to sacrifce their bodies and hang on to the bike so it wouldn't start flipping over and over all the way to a fireball grave. Finally everyone got up, but we had to carry bikes over ruts and scramble to the top.
Well, we get back to the resting area, gather our thoughts, then head down the main trail to re-fuel. The two MX dirtbikes are in the lead, with all of us on 4 wheelers close behind. The guys in front were driving way too fast, trying to out-do the other guy, when the dive into a blind corner. Of course a toyota truck was heading up the same trail. Boom! One guy slid under the truck (Toyota was lifted pretty high, I think he was running 37's) while his bike went off the trail and partway down a cliff side, and the other guy missed the truck but his bike took a mean bounce off the tire.
Anyway, my point is...don't get too carried away when trail riding unless it's closed off for only you to ride it. You can't control the other people around you.
