Rear Brakes went out on 400EX
#1
A buddy of mine asked me to post this here. After owning his quad for around 3 months, the rear brakes just stopped working. From what I can inspect and he has told me, here is the situation: The lever up front has no compression, it presses all the way down and comes up just because the spring is on there, if it wasnt, then the lever would stay down. There seems to small leakage around the rear where the caliper is. He said they quit working around the time when he was trail riding and hit a limb, that might have hit the master cylinder. He got the extended warranty (3 years), as wondering if we pulled this apart if it would void it? Best case scenerio, that the pads are worn, but there is no rear grinding with metal hitting metal on the rear rotor, and no compression in the lever. Thanks for any help.

Warranty isn't going to cover this problem unless the problem is a leaking caliper or leaking mastercylinder.
If it's the brakeline or reservoir that is damaged, the owner is held liable for the repair.
Look for a broken line to the caliper, line to the fluid reserovir, and the reservoir itself. If no damge is found and the leak doen't appear to be coming from the lines or reservoir, carry it to the dealer for warranty work.
Honda, and all the other OEMs, do not cover brake systems under warranty unless it is caused by a leaking caliper or master cylinder.
Good luck to you and your friend.
