Since I don't want my kid to die in a ball of flames from the engine exploding, like yours has twice now, I think I'll stick with the Honda. By the way, it's spelled "grease". Too bad this forum doesn't have spell check, BUB.

By the way, I did it one time, just because i was bored that day.The factory piston was fine and the head .Unlike a damn old 4-stroke I did't spend alot of cash rebuilding it! I poped it out 50 over, jetted the carb,k@n filter, and to top if of a dynojet pipe!So bring that rattling 250 out and let me spank that a$$!

9 years old, 250EX..How many things are wrong with that? Parental negligence, ignorance, lack of love and concern for child's safety, too lazy to say no to junior, the meth screws up your judgement...Why do you think the manufacturers won't sell you a 250 for your 9 year old? ITS NOT SAFE. Doesn't matter what undersupervised activities you have allowed your kid to do that mistakenly make you think he/she can handle this, no kid that age has the judgement to stay out of dangerous situations on that machine. The quad weighs 350#, how will that look on top of your kid? Ever seen Timmy on South Park? Save yourself the cost of the atv, just send your child to steal hubcaps on the highway. I can refer you to a good trauma hospital, funeral home and oh yeah, don't forget to donate the organs. I suppose, after all that, your only recourse will be to sue Honda, the seller, the landowner, the ambulance company, the doctors, the hospital, the people on this forum, the station where you gassed it, and everyone else associated with the quad. Stupid should hurt, but not hurt little kids who have to rely on their parents to make decisions that keep them safe. It should hurt YOU.

Hondarider300 made a very good point.. Honda's have some of the best brakes ever.. look at the 450r.. that is one this it does pravail in front of the YFZ and I am no loyalist seeing i own both company's.. And I respect that some people are loylists to the machine that they ride or the company they like.. but no need to flame somewhere else
jonezy and davey.. your near ruining this thread.. If you dont have any useful information then dont leave posts..NOOBS

Thanks for getting entirely off the subject. The reason I joined this forum was for mechanical advice, not to be attacked by people who don't know anything about how my 9 year old rides. My son has been riding since he was 5, and handles a 250 just fine. That's not the point, but thanks for the "intelligent" replies from some of you.

Sorry Mom!I did't mean to get you stirred up! Just playing! The sound to me might be incorect valve adjustment. If you can find a factory muffler and go from there so you can here the bike run.The kid who owend it before you might have played with the air/fuel mixture and screwed it up causing it to run to rich!
Later on!!!! Davey

You say its flooding itself.... can you give me more info on that?
Sometimes, a lean condition will lead to pinging. Any other symtoms? Backfiring, hesitation, missing? If you run with the choke on, does it get better or worse, or the same. You could also try covering the snorkle inlet, with duct tape, by about 25 %. This will make it richer too. If either of these makes the pinging go away, then it lean.
Hows the spark plug look? white and dry?
Sometimes it just a cheap muffler that allows the pinging to be audible. Not sure if you have access to an original pipe. Changes to the exhaust or the intake, usually result in a lean condition.
Heres a guide to jetting, and it also lists drivability symptoms.

What I meant by flooding itself, was just the fumes mainly and running rough. It doesn't backfire, although it did before my brother put the gasket on the exhaust (where it goes into the motor).
I just started it and ran it for a second with the choke on, and it didn't make a difference that I could tell with the pinging. It just made horrible fumes. It's almost like a ticking sound, rather than pinging. I took the air box cover off, and ran it, and it seemed to sound a little better. Since it's night, and I don't want the neighbors after me, I'll do a little more tomorrow.
It has a brand new spark plug. I changed it the first day I brought it home, since it looked like the original plug was still in it, and it was coal black when I pulled it. I'll pull the new one tomorrow and see what it looks like. It's only got a few hours of riding time on it.
Thanks for that link on jetting. I'm gonna re-read some of the symptoms of running lean or rich.
I appreciate your help!
