Honda Oil Change Help.
Hi I have a Honda Rancher 350 2004. And almost put about 100 miles on it. It was due for its 100 mile Oil change and check up.. But I still dont have a Trailer to drive the 30 mins it takes to get to the Dealer. So decided to change the oil myself. Went by the directions totally. Everything went great.
But now As Im sitting hear Im thinking, did I do everything right lol??? whats bothering me right now, is that on the honda rancher Oil Filter is a Small Rubber oring on the front. (not the 2 Orings on the Oil case Cover). You know the one that suppose to face out when You install it?
Well my question is... Your not suppose to take that off the oil filter are you? And put it on the new one? Lol for the life of me I could of swore the New one has it already on it...
Man Im so stupid sometimes. I always do this...

The ring is part of the filter. It faces toward the cover, and there is a nipple on the cover that seats into the ring. The spring at the back provides the pressure to keep the nipple seated in the ring. Once in a while somebody puts one in backward, and then things get exciting!

LOL, well I know for a fact I didnt put it in backwards. All I was worried about was that Stupid rubber piece.
Bye the way, Originally I was just going to change the oil. But decided to look at the Filter just in case. Glad I did it was nasty. Even saw some metal Fillings in it. (guess thats why they suggest 100 miles first change).
Anyway thanks for the info. Still have to get it in shop for they can check the Valve Clearance.

This might sound like a stupid question but, since the oil filter is So high Up on the engine. If you open it up when its cold, And not take out the oil drain bolt, will alot of the oil come out?
How does it work. Does it get pushed up when the engine is running, and run through?
Just wondering.

I do my first change (oil and filter) on a new bike at about 1-2 hrs, then again at 10 hrs. You want to get those metal filings out of there ASAP! After that, I play it by ear, and change when the oil begins to turn dark. That is usually less than 20 hrs. Personally, I think 100 hrs. between changes is way to long. (Honda recommends the initial change at 20hrs./100mi., then after that every 100hrs./600mi. I can't see these oil change intervals, even if you ride where there is absolutely no dust!)

Only the oil that is in the oil filter cavity will come out when you remove the filter, but it seems there's always some in there. If you're really interested in the oil flow throught that engine, the OE Honda shop manual has a lubrication flow chart in it. If you don't want to buy one, ask your local dealer if you can look at it.
