Default reeds, how can you tell if there bad?

I do not know how reeds work, nor how you can tell if they need to be replaced.....

I did however, take my reeds off my CR500 yesterday, and just cleaned them off with carb clearner.

Maybe its my imagination, but the bike is starting a whole!!!! lot better now, than ever before.

How do i know if they need to be replaced.... i dont want to replace them for more power, just for ease of starting.

If they close tight to the block and don't have little fractures they are good. It is a good idea to change them once in a while, though.
