Default Rancher Oil Cooler problems

I was wondering if anyone has ever had problems with their Oil Cooler/fan not working. I've noticed recently that the side of my ATV has been getting warmer than usual. I don't drive it for long periods, just short durations of a mile/10 minutes on my farm.

I have a 2003 Honda Rancher 4x4 ES with a little over 400 miles. I believe the oil cooler started acting up around 325-350 miles and haven't had time to take it in to the shop. Any ideas on how to go about checking where the problem lies? (Ignition control module, fan motor, oil sensor, or what)

All help appreciated. Thanks.

Rich

what makes u think its not working right, my 02 rancher fan has only kicked on once since i owned it and i got over 400 miles on it now, way to test part of the system is to ground the sending unit on the lower left side opissiote the oil filter side, then turn the key on with the switch grounded and fan should turn on

The thing that makes me think its not working is the fact that if I drive it for longer than 10 minutes and leave it running, I don't see the fan on, plus the fact that where the oil filter is, it is extremely hot on that side. Too hot to ride in shorts. It didn't used to be like that. I've checked the wiring connections (ie disconnected and reconnected, but that didn't have any effect, not that I expected it would, but I was hoping for something easy). Thanks for your reply, I will have to try grounding it to see if the fan comes on.

Our 2001 Fourtrax 350 FE is just shy of 4000km (2485 mil) and we have only had the oil cooler kick in three or four times this is only when we are pulling heavy loads such pulling a trailor when were picking stones. We have never had it kick in when were just riding, I have rode it for over an hour and the fan has not kicked in. I doubt that you have a problem but it never hurts to make sure.

I have a 2001 350 4X4 and I've only heard the fan come on once in the 2400 kms I've put on it (4100 total on the bike), and oddly enough it was in the winter time when I was towing someone and got stuck!

I have noticed in the last 2 rides out, that my right leg has been getting warmer than usual, but it has been hot out lately (30 degrees celcius). If your overheat light (for the oil) does not come on, then I would not worry about it too much.

If you are still concerned about it, there are directions out there on how to wire it to a switch so you can turn it on manually, but it will still come on automatically too. let me know if you need the site.

If you have a website that details this wiring, I would be interested in it. Turning on the lights last night/evening didn't have any effect as to the fan coming on.

Thanks to all for your responses.

Wiring a manual switch to the fan

That's for a foreman 450, but it's the same as the rancher. Give it a try!

Mine comes on now and again, but not as often as you might think. I use it to haul a drag around a riding ring for maybe 20 minutes in August temps, and it may or may not come on.
