XR650r to TRX450r
#1
I'm thinking of getting back into quads. I have had quads for a long time but they just lost there fear factor to me. So I went to bikes started on a CR500 and then moved on to a XR650r. Well had my fun but miss the quad question is what quad should I start back on? I had a 400ex with some mods that got slow quick and I don't want that to happen again. I went to the local dealer and rode a 450r today and i'l have to say it didn't show me much. The power was not even close to what I was hoping for. I'm thinking about going to the yamaha dealer and see how the yfz feels. The problem I have with the honda 1. Is single cam WTF is that doesn't hit hard at all. Will this quad hang with the yamaha from what I read no. What should I do if I don't get some more power than ill have to go with a CRF450. I need some honest answers from people that don't think honda is the only brand out there.

You have a problem with the 450r engine because of the single cam (actually unicam, which is a much better design)? But you have a xr650 right now... and you want to go to a crf 450.... so you think the unicam is a bad set up, yet there is a worse setup in the bike you own (SOHC), and the next one you plan on getting has a unicam also (CRF), and the trx450r engine was closely based upon the crf450r engine, and you don't like the trx cam, but i take it you do like the CRF cam.
ATV's are detuned, if you are not pleased with the 450r power and speed, chances are you won't be impressed by the yfz, the speed and power differance is very minimal. You can mod these machines up but that would cost many $$$. You are coming from aq 650!, a detuned 450 quad would have a hard time pleasing you. Maybe you should build a custom machine......

Spend some money in the right mods to a 450R amd you'll love it. Speed-wise, the YFZ isn't going to impress you anymore than the 450R. You may need to check out the Kawasaki V-Force 700 or the Yamaha Raptor 660. I'm not a fan of the Bombardier DS650, but hey, it's your money. Be aware that while those machines may be faster as far as power goes, they are not as good in almost any other aspect like suspension and handling.

The Yamaha is a little faster, but the Honda has the better trail bike frame. You live in Virginia, so you are going to be doing mostly trail riding, right? If you can trail ride a desert bike like the 650R, you can be happy on anything.
The stock 450's are in a mild state of tune, and neither is very impressive right out of the box! Do an HRC kit, header/exhaust, and K&N, and you will see a big difference!

I know my 650 is like the cave man of dirtbike I mean I don't have enverted forks. It's like a drag car fast on a straight but don't try to turn it. So there isn't much difference between the quads thats all I need to hear I love honda so I will prolly get the 450r. I just have to get used to the lack off straight line power. I like the CRF450 because it is fast and handles well but man these bikes are going to kill me. Well going to the honda dealer and see what they will give me for the 650. Thanks for the help.
