Default removed "baffles" on my '86 fourtrax

The other day, I took some sort of cover off of my exhaust pipe on my 1986 Honda Fourtrax 250 (The Utility Bike). What I discovered was a huge hole in the muffler/exhaust pipe and the bike is now louder and it sounds almost as loud as a 400ex without baffles. I did notice a power gain in every gear from the low end right up to the top end. It is more responsive and the front end can lift up now. My dad wants me to put the cover back on so I can create back pressure so the engine won't blow up.

Any comments/opinions?

I also have a 1986 Fourtrax 350, How do I remove the electric starter. It is unbolted, but there is no room to wiggle it out. Do I need to remove the header pipes and engine side cover?

If you re-jet the carb it should be fine.
