A buddy of mine bent his stock tie rods racing last sunday. My questions is, are there any heavy duty (aftermarket type) tie rods available. If so, where at...

Thanks!

Eric

Just pick up four or five stock ones from your Honda dealer, they're only five bucks each.

You will find that Honda saved some money by making some of the parts for the 400 not as good as they are on the 250R. The tie rods might cost only $5, but they are not the same. After bending one on a 400, I compared a new one to and old 250R tie rod. The R tie rod is about 3/8 in longer, but the diameter of the rod on the 250R is much larger. I now have R one's on my 400. They might cost more but they don't bend as quick. The best way to buy them, is to buy a complete set with ball joints and tie rods. Leager does make some stronger tie rods, but I don't know the cost.

Personally, I'd rather stay with the weaker tie-rods. If you take the extreme case, and get the strongest tie rod possible, that just means something else (probably more expensive) has to give/bend/break when you wreck. Keep your weakest link the easiest/cheapest to replace.

Thanks for the replys. That does make sense. Let the weaker link be a $5 part rather than something else. We havent priced the stock ones before...did not know they were that cheap. I will have a few in my spare/extra parts box.

One of our riders went though 12 400 tie rods and dnf about 9 races with the stock tie rods. This spring he switched to the R tie rods and he has not bent any and has not dnf any more races with frond end problems. In the long run the R tie rods will cost less if it helps you finish a race.
