Has anyone ever had an 85/86 honda trx250 four wheeler? I'm looking at one for sale tomorrow. I've been looking for a honda big red three wheeler for sometime for light duty work, with no luck. As far as I can tell, the trx250 is basically a big red with a 4th wheel, right? I'm not looking for performance, just reliability! Was this a reliable model, or should I stay away from it?

well its definitly no speed demon,35 mph is all it will do,but its dependable.just check the oil in the rear and make sure it doesn't have water in it and the swing arm bearings, check the boot where the driveshaft goes into the swing arm for rips

Extremely tough bike in an era when everyone was just starting out. Top speed on a well kept one will be just a bit less than a 300 honda. Of all of the mid 80's utilities, this was probably the most reliable. I used to ride with about 12 of them at different times. They were very popular in their time. There was a guy around here that used to buy them wholesale 10 at a time and sell them out of his front yard. Well, actually he only did this twice. Once with 87 250's and once with 88 300's. If it is in good shape, it should still be a solid bike.

They are extremely tough. I have a friend who use to ride his grandfather's 250 around. They can go through anything. Just like someone else said, it's no speed demon, or high-jumper, but it will last a long time. It's a Honda.

Still have one. Still use it around the ranch. Pulls trailers. Moves snow (not dep and needs chains). Hauls elk and deer. Very tough and reliable - my only complaint: the tires wear out or get dry-rotted!
