Honda ES info!!!
#1
Hello all. I have a 2000 Rancher with about 1200 miles. Lately, but not all the time it doesn't shift. I hear the ES trying to shift but it doesn't go into gear. This usually happens after its hot and I shut it off for a few minutes. When I start again it won't shift. After I try a few times it will shift and then be OK. If I start it, shift into reverse to exit garage and stall it will not shift back to Neutral. At this time I have to use manual shifter arm. I called my local Honda dealer and explained this to him and made an appointment to bring it in. He asked me when I did my last clutch adjustment. I said not in a long time. He told me to do a clutch adjustment and give it a try. I did the clutch adjustment and rode 160 miles last weekend with no problems. The Honda tech said the ES is pretty bullet proof...but the clutch needs to be in adjustment. Also, before I called Honda I checked all connections, connectors and wires as suggested by others on this site. When you do clutch adjustment use screwdriver and open-end wrench. Do not use socket. Hold center adjusting screw while you tighten locknut. If you don't the adjusting screw will turn too. Hope this helps someone.
