Faulty 450ES gearbox?
#1
Hi, my 99 450 is playing up. It often says it is in one gear when it is clearly in another but when you try to change, the gear motor clicks and the lights dim briefly but 9 times out of 10 it doesn't change. Also it wont change down gears to neutral if it is not running.
I have had a number of suggestions as to the problem, firstly that the battery is done and not producing enough current for the gear motor to turn fully, secondly that the gear position sensor is faulty or thirdly that the brushes are worn in the gear motor.
I doubt if I am the only one to have this problem so I would welcome any suggestions.

A lot of the es shifting hondas, dont like to shift well when not moving. Try to downshift as you slow down for a stop. If you are at a standstill, and need to shift, rock it forwards and back, while shifting.
Hows the oil? Clean and enough?
how long has it been since the clutch was adjusted? (The little nut and screw on the front of the case)
If you get the battery load tested, at napa or wherever, itll let you know if the battery is shot or not. They dont charge anything for this check.
Id start with the clutch adjustment..... loosen the nut, and lightly unscrew the screw,(ccw), til you hit resistance. Then turn it clockwise, 1/4 turn, and snug up the nut.
