Paddles for my daughter!
I like 6-paddle Skat-Trak Edges on the 400. I put them on ITP T-9 rims, which are wider than stock or Douglass. The bike ends up about 3" wider, for some nice increased stability. Some Mohawks up front would be a big help too.
There are a lot of new molded tires out there these days. All are kind of heavy, and in my opinion should be reserved for the big bore machines. I still prefer the very light buffed down Skats.

Any V type tire would do well. Like Recon said though the molded tires are heavy and rob alot of power. I had Geckos on my 400 and hated them. I was gona throw them away, till I tried them on my 450. They work great on that bike. I now have haulers on the 400, but I wish they were Edge's.

The Edges are v-type so they will give you better steering. They will however lack in forward movement, compared to the hauler. The haulers kind of lift the front end and cause you to have to back out of it to get the steer tires on the ground. The V tires will start heading in the direction the quad is leaned while accelerating.

Not sure what you mean by something more "durable". I have had my Edges for many years. Sand tires just don't wear out at all unless you are going to ride down Gecko Road. I might pick a tougher tire for some place like Superstition Mountain (with all its rocks), however.
