250R Price
#1
Found a stock 250r in todays paper and was thinking of purchasing but was wondering what the going price should be for a 86? The owner states it is very clean and hardly ridden. What type of things should I look for to make sure the bike is in good condition?
Thanks alot

For an '86 model 4-wheeler that probably cost about $2500 brand new, and has no-doubt been rode hard for years (even though the owner probably says a little old lady ride it for years really easy), I would estimate about $500 at the most. Definately don't sell the '00 'Shee to get it!

I would start at $2200 if in great shape. Look at replacing plastic, bearings and seals, tires, and bushings. 250r parts are expensive and replacing worn out parts will add up fast. Look for cracks/ welds in the frame and in front of the front sprocket on the left side. Look at the steering stem, they bend easily near the top. Also look at the air filter, if it's clean, he probabally took care of it. Don't be afraid to take the rear plastic off to get a good lok at everything.

Just sold an 86 250R, stock except for Maier plastic & fmf pipe, in above average condition for $2800 & the guy was delighted to get it. It had been rode hard, but well maintained & had no cracks or welds in the frame. Some parts for the 250R are expensive, but Rocky Mt ATV sells rear axle bearings for $14.50 each & the seals for $1.50, which is about half as much as dealer prices. You can save by shopping around. The rear axle bearings & swingarm bearings are the same for the 250X/300EX. A properly setup 250R will outhandle a Banshee any day! I'll buy any and all running and rolling 250R's out there for $500.

If it is a pretty clean one get it for that price
but that is an average price for an 86. If your looking for a deal head a little lower 2200 and less. But you wont find one for much less than that. You might find same price only more stuff. if your willing to wait and look.

Gary,
I am currently looking at a '87 Banshee. It seems to be in decent condition. It is totally stock except for some Holeshot's and Renthal bars. The guy is asking $2200. What should I offer him? Thanks in advance.

It's amazing the price the 250R is getting down here in Southern California. My friend just bought an 87, broken rear fenders, bent tie-rod, mismatched wheels with matched tires (go figure), a pos old pipe and a jury rigged silencer, bent factory bars and ran lousy and paid $3500! A decent 86 or 87 down here STARTS at $3500 and goes up!
