Okay peoples, how many of you have bent the 400ex steering stem? Don't be shy, i bent 2 the stock and a Lonestar stem. One other thing what bars were you using when you bent the stem? You almost have to try to break the swing arm, but the stem just seems to bend if like magic in a soft roll over. thanx

Oooh ohhh, I have. But this last roll over which bent the existing stem into the letter L was my friends fault(with O'Neil Prolock bars) Now I am in the market for a chromoly stem, but am having a tuff time finding one I am willing to buy. I refuse to pay $300+ for Lonestar, even though it may be the best. Heck I could buy like 5 stockers before I paied for the Lonestar. Does anyone know where I can get a good aftermarket stem that looks good for like a little over $200 or less? The best one ive found now is from Precision ATV for $280. Still a little high. I would buy like a Leagers or something but everyone seems to be sold out of them. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Also my bars got tweeked and I need new ones. I have been thinking about ProTapers, but dont know, seeing in how you have to pay 70 bucks more for the mounting kit. Are the PTapers really worth it? Let me know. Thanks

I'm 43 and I don't expect to be bending anything on my 400EX. Although it might bend me sometime!

Price your stem elsewhere, I have been priced less than $100 for a stock stem. Of course that's in the US, you Canuks may have to pay some duties on them...

There was a guy on the classifieds a while back that adv he would replace the stock stem with chromoly for $100 and use the stock bottom and top pieces. I can page thru my 10,000+ e-mails and try to find the address if anyone's interested...

My friend bent his in the Ironman race and took it to a local welding shop and for $50 they cut out the bent section and replaced it with a solid piece of shaft. They machined it down smooth after they welded it - it really looks good and is a lot stronger. The only thing he had to change was the breather hose for the gas tank. (it goes inside the stock stem)

don't know what you guys think, but i believe part of the problem with bending stems is the leverage from the bars in a role over. i've been using protapers and i maybe be coming to the conclusion that its the bars that ultimatily are to blame for the bending, the bars don't seem to flex at all in the crash. i thought that the bars were suppost to be weak link, but in my case the protapers seem to be the strong point and the stem is the weak. I don't know but to me lonestar isn't the best they bend just like the stocker, right in the clamp area, and they are chromoly stems, the real crappy thing is that the companies know of the problems and don't want to put forth an effort to remedy it. maybe will just have to sell my bars.

So its not best to buy protapers, and a after market stem. Well then what would you do if you were me. I need handle bars and a stem. Should I buy a aftermarket stem, and then buy like some good but not too expensive aluminum bars like the ones I had (O'Neil Prolocks) They worked real nice and looked great and only cost like 50 0r 60 bucks . Please let me know what you would do. Thanks alot
