Kimpex Trunk (Seat)
#11
I've been looking at the Kimpex Deluxe ATV trunk for my '05 Foreman. The model I'm looking at doesn't have the rear big tail light, but instead has a cut out area made to strap down a small ice chest, storage bag or 2 1/2 gallon gas can. Runs about $230.
My 6 year old son has a Suzuki LTA50, but he likes to ride with dad on longer trail rides. My brother's softsided rear storage bag has a padded seat and is OK for adult riders, but it doesn't have anything for passengers to hold on to. I really like the built in grab handles on the Kimpex and the taller seat back. Should make kids feel pretty secure back there. Just hope they don't fall asleep.
So how does the Kimpex seat do with a full size adult rider on it? Is it wide enough for a 200 lb forty something year old ****? Do the U bolts hold it securely in place over rocky terrain?
Thanks

I've had this box for about a year now. The seat is plenty big enough for a 200lb butt. Although I see plenty of people riding double using this box, please remember that adding a 200lb person plus the weight of the box and contents to the rear rack will change the handling dynamics of your quad. If you flip your bike while carrying a passenger, it could be real bad news.
I'm not saying I've never carried a passenger, I sometimes ride the kids around the yard and once I had to carry a buddy who's ATV couldn't be towed. But I think you should really think twice about carrying a passenger on a regular basis.
I usually ride without the seat attached. When stopped, it makes a great backrest with your feet on the front fenders.

Good point on the different handling characteristics with the extra weight over the rear axle. I do wonder if extra support for the rear rack might be required given the somewhat low factory recommended carrying weight limits.
We wouldn't be doing much riding with an adult on the back, but occasionally we do find ourselves with too many people for everyone to ride solo. The Kimpex seat should be much more comfortable than two up on a foam pad sitting on the rear rack. We don't ride very fast and usually stick to the main trails or logging roads when riding with a passenger. I'm too busy enjoying the scenery to go too fast on the ATVs. I'll save the speed rush for my motorcycle.
Do I understand your comments correctly that you can remove the bottom portion of the seat independent of the backrest? If so, I think I'm liking this trunk more and more.
How about capacity in the two side storage compartments? Is there room for much or are you kind of limited because the trunk is made from plastic?
Thanks for your reply.

I wish they had the version that has the place for the cooler or fuel tank (in place of the brake light) when I got mine. I've seen a lot of these boxes on the trails and have yet to see where anyone has actually hooked up the brake light. I saw where Canucker (in this thread) hooked it up and had problems, but he's the first person I've heard of to bother hooking it up.
It is deceiving how much space these things have. My open face helmet fits inside fine, but the full face one will not. I usually carry a tool bag across the back, a rain suit and bag with snacks, TP, flashlight, etc on one side and a cooler in the other side. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much space it has inside.

I have the Kimpex seat. It is great.
Light lense started to melt right above the bulb. Unpluged it. I then broke the lense in an accident. When I replaced it, (lense, base, fixture and bulb) I noticed that both elements in ther bulb were both lit with just the tail lights on. Something was wrong. This should be a combination tail light and brake light. Found the bulb from Kimpex was faulty. Shorted betweeen both elements. If the old bulb was faulty also, that would explain the melting lense (both element on all the time / heat buildup). Anyway, I haven't tried a new bulb yet. Does this sound right or am I way off base.

I just saw where Tamarack is coming out with a new box/seat. This thing looks great. If I didn't already have the Kimpex, I would definately look very hard at this box.

Heat buildup was because both tail light and brake light was "on" all the time. Dealer who sold me the seat did the installation (included in price). Well before I took it back to blame them, I investigated myself. With a voltmeter, I found the wiring to be OK. Thought it must be the bulb. New bulb, same thing. Then it worked fine. Then just one element on and the other one just glowing. I don't know what to make of this. So I just disconnected the tail light wire and have a brake light only for now. Talk to dealer when I go there next time. They made the connections with those clip on over the wire things, that no one likes. I don't know what they are called.
Anybody have any ideas?

I ordered my Kimpex Deluxe trunk today. I found a listing on ebay and discovered they are a an online store that carries a lot of ATV stuff. The trunk I ordered is called the Deluxe Flexi trunk. It has a place that you can strap on a gas can or cooler. It is supposed to come with all the mounting hardware also. I expect it here on Friday. I'll post some pics when I get it.. Oh this is where I ordered from:
