First off, I hate these "which is faster" posts! Both these bikes have limited suspension, and any talk of REALLY going fast on either machine is just silly. If you want to REALLY go fast, get a machine with some REAL suspension. Now, if you want to talk about which has more power for the mud, etc., I'll be glad to oblige.
I own both these bikes, and both have an FMF MegaMaxII muffler, and UNI air filters as the only engine mods. The Rancher has a 100 cc displacement advantage, but a 150 lb. weight disadvantage. The 2wd Rancher isn't geared down like the 4X4 is, so it has a fair bit on the top end. And, the Rancher has big fenders for some mud protection.
If at one time you were considering a Blaster, I am betting you are a kid??? I always go as LIGHT as possible (that is why I own 500 lb Ranchers, and not some hulking 700 lb utility beast!), and in this case that is the EX. It is based on the utility Recon (a very capable machine), but doesn't have the racks so it is 50 lbs. lighter. The little EX will do anything the Recon will.

250ex has waaayy better accel and a hell of a lot snappier than the rancher is, although ranchers are taller, and have mudflaps for some protection from the mud

I have both sitting in the garage. THe 250ex is my Godsons. I got it for him for his birthday this october..the 350 rancher is a 03 2wd and it was my first one. Also got the new 450 Foreman which is the slowest of the three in a road race by far. The 250ex just gets faster and faster. It is by far the quickest in a drag race no hands down, next fastest is the 350 rancher and its no slouch. A couple of weekends back, one of my friends was riding the 250ex and he is about a 200lb. grown man. We were riding with two suzuki 500 vinsons. I was on my Foreman. Coming out on the dirt roads from trail riding they all cut them loose. The Vinson 500 was first, but my friend was right in his tail pipe all the way out of there on the 250 sportrax. Next was a 350 rancher and last, and I mean way last was me on the Foreman 450. The Foreman definately is not made for speed! The 250ex Sportrax is a little ball of fire!
