Default Need some help restoring 250r

I got a 250r four wheel off of a friend for 1200 bucks. Its torn down completely but I have seen it together so I know most of the parts are there. The motor is supposedly brand new, at least the top end, and I can vouch for that because the piston still has inked numbers from the factory. The sleeve(?) has HM cast into the side and the head is a Powerhead. I still plan on having it gone through and checked by a pro...
Anyway, Im ***** deep in restoring the frame/suspension right now. Im not sure what year it is exactly, the frame is being sandblasted today so hopefully I will find some numbers. I have some off the motor though, can I find any info off of those? They are stamped on the case near where the shifter goes in.
OK, now the important question...Where can I go to get quality oem, reman., and aftermarket parts w/o paying a fortune at the dealer? We've had Hondas in the family for years, but Ive never had to do any upgrading other than replacing axles, brakes, etc. on our 4x4s. I have a shop manual and Im ready to put this thing together....

For new OEM parts the best place is www.servicehonda.com, for used there is ebay. To view serial numbers you can subscribe to macdizzy's web site, used to be free but it's a pay service now. He had all the different year of the R's with serial number ranges for the frames and motors.

You can still get that info from MacDizzy for free. As long as you dont go into the forums then your OK.

Great, thanks for the links..
Odd thing though, the numbers I found on my engine are: TBO6E- 240321. I double checked after seeing it wasnt an option on the MacDizzy site but that is definitely what is there. The "240321" is stamped on a metal plate that is riveted right below the "TBO6E" which is cast.

Possible the motor is out of an ATC originally.

Does the piston have a round cut out on the intake side or does it have two rectangular windows in it.
If its the windows its trx if its the round its atc or possibly a CR. doesnt mean for sure the bottom end goes with it though.

Note: the cr lower is completly different.

Also the frame numbers should be stamped into the frame under the front hood there is a web between the spars that has a fold in it the # is on there

I don't know about the engine numbers, but the frame numbers will be in one of two places. For the 86-87 model years, there is a data tag welded to the lower support of the rear subframe near the left footpeg. For the 88-89 bikes, it's in between the upper front shock mounts on a flared sheet steel brace. Hope this helps, and good luck with the resto.

Piston is a flat top. The numbers arent actually inked theyre engraved now that I take a better look. I wish I knew the guy that built the dam thing so I can find out whats in it...
I should get my frame back tomorrow, the guy that blasted said he'd go ahead and paint it too, so less work for me! Hopefully the numbers are still there...Some thinks Ive narrowed down while searching for parts: Front a-arms are 88-89 (ball joints are integrated), the rear swing arm is 86-87 (two bearing clamp bolts), and according to blue250r the motor is possibly from an ATC. Starting to look like a frankenstien bike...Oh well, as long as everything fits up one way or another...

Nothing wrong with those ATC motors. I still watch them kick a$$ here in sandlake, Ore all the time. I had an 81 and miss it sometimes.
