on the 02 honda rubicon?i was going to trade my rappy for one and the dealer said when it is real cold outside you have to let it warm up for 10 min. or the trans will not work. are these quads any good?i want to some whaty ride it hard and put large tires on it for mud and such. do they like deep water?

For water, mud and tough service the hydrostatic drive in the Rubicon cannot be beat. I do not have my Rubicon yet but should have it by the third week in January. I could have had it last week but I want an Olive GPScape model.

My familiarity with hydrostatic drives comes from heavy equipment. Because it is a type of fluid drive it is very important to have the fluid at or close to proper operating temperature. This in no way detracts from the unit, it merely requires good mechanical sense.

In my experience with hydrotatic drives, they are very, very rugged and durable. I usually let machinery run for at least ten minutes in colder weather and am careful about putting too much load or rpms on the piece until proper operating temps are achieved.

while Killerex is already asking the D1 and D2 questions, can some one also tell us how it plays into the high and low range? with the D1, D2, and hi/low does it kind of make it a 4 speed? or would riding in low D2, be the same as riding in High D1?

FoxTrot; i'm also looking at the 2005 Rubi. if you don't mind, i was hoping you could emailing my the price you where quoted. maybe you can get an even better deal if you bring a referral.

Dragginbutt, i was hoping you could email me too.

email me at jomer@webtv.net

thanks joe

D1 is like high range, D2 is like low range and ESP is electronic shift program. the hondamatic is the most reliable tranny out the but all hondas are a pain to start in cold weather, my rancher takes like 10 minutes to warm up.

In all reality, every ATV should be warmed up before ridden. Oil is what make the trans on the Rubicon function, and yes you should let it warm up. Yes, they are dependable.

D1 keeps the engine RPM in the power band and D2 keeps the RPM in the torque band. ESP is five preset "gears". D1 has a "sportier" feel to it and is more throttle responsive. D2 is better for traveling long distances on easy roads becuase it runs at a lower RPM than D1.
