Just found one of these that can be had for a pretty good price but it has a couple of issues.

First is that the brakes need some work.....are these pretty friendly to work on?

Second is that it was a daily user on a farm....ie 7k miles, if it is in good shape should I be concerned?

What else should I know about this machine.

Appreciate the input.

Thanks,

James

If the brakes havent been looked at ...in a long time, there could be some parts to replace, especially if the brake drum seals are shot and water and or mud got in. Parts should be easy to find, and a service manual isnt that hard to come by.
Check for engine smoke, if you see blue, Id pass, unless the price is very low.
I think that one has a limited slip front end, with clutch plates. Make sure you drive it, and that the front wheels get power.
Farm equipment usually leads a tough life, much tougher than a weekend trail machine. With 7k miles on it, it could have plenty of life left in it.. Or it could be totally used up, and might be the reason its for sale.
This was a utility machine, and the ride is stiff and uncomfortable for trail riding, but if youre planning on using it for utility work...its gonna be just fine.

Well I went and looked at it today and it is not a 400 it is a 450ES.

It has seen use but the motor seemed strong and no smoke. I steered a little stiff but that is probably due to the full-time 4x4 that I am not used to. The up shifts on the tranny seemed smooth and effortless but the downshifts seemed a bit clunky...normal? It is going to need brake work front & rear..no way around it. Needs a heck of a cleaning (it's a farm tool, what did I expect!).

It's priced well below KBB value.....what do you guys think?

Thats a bit better than a 400. The es can be a bit rough, thats nothing to be worried about. As long as its shifts when you hit the button.
If its quite abit below kbb...is it because of the brakes? or is something else wrong? Did they get an estimate for the brake work?
I wouldnt hesitate to buy a 450...I have one, and they are a tough work machine, and do ok on the trail. They arent the softest riding quad, but it does a pretty fair job at powerslides,...if you can do 2wd.
What year is it? And how much is he asking....if you dont mind.
The steering is a bit stiff on them, some has to do with full time 4wd, and some has to do with the toe out, that honda 4 wheelers have.

honda,

He is getting rid of it to upgrade to a newer unit. No estimate on the brakes but it shouldn't be that hard I wouldn't think to work on these.

He's asking $2500 for it and could be bought for a bit less I believe.

2wd? Didn't know it was "selectable"?

Thanks,
