For the type of riding i do ( mainly trails) I dont jump anything higher that 6 feet and don't really plan on it either. I'm 6' 260 lbs. I think this is half my problem but my front shocks are just fine. I've been screwing around with the rear though. I just can't get it right. Now i have the preload nut maxed out, and i have the dampening screw 2 turns from the whole way in. the shock won't bottom now, but i have a pretty firm and harsh ride on the slow bumps. The rear end likes to hop around on dirt roads too. SHould i consider an aftermarket unit? Revalving if possible? A stiffer shock?

Consider having your stock shock valved and sprung for your weight and riding style. The 400EX from the factory is sprung & valved for a 180lbs rider. You will be much happier with a custom setup. This shouldn't cost all that much. On the high end of the scale would be $450 for a TCS SCS setup.
