450R vs. 400EX in the woods....
What is up? Still bummed about my Chargers, but oh well.
Anyway, what are the main differences between the ex and the R on the trails? I'll either be getting a 450R or YFZ...now leaning towards the Honda. Can you still muscle over large rocks with the R? Or is it more of a stricktly MX/dunes quad? I can't test ride any of them, so I'm relying on your help. I had a 400EX for a few years, and I loved the way it handled on the fast trails. Can I expect the same from the 450R? Can you putt around on the R when you have to? Like on slow, technical rocky stuff? Tough decision between the YFZ and the R, but from what I've been gathering, the 450R will be a bit more forgiving on the trails.

The R is a trail bike that can be adapted to MX. The YFZ is an MX bike that can be adapted to the trail.
The R frame handles superbly on trails! But, the motor is geared tall and likes to rev, so it requires a lot of clutch work at low speed. I have a 400EX (and better yet a Rancher!) I can ride in the technical stuff, so I just stay away from that when riding the R (or the Z400). Some gearing changes will help, but the best fix would be if Honda would release a trails version with a wide ratio transmission. You will find that the YFZ has exactly the same type of engine, so it is no help here either. In fact, it is even more of a revver than the R. Neither is the hot choice for slow technical trails, but on faster trails and wide open desert, there is no machine better than the R!
I spent an afternoon trail riding a friends YFZ, and was never so happy to get off that thing and back on my Z400! The EX on the other hand doesn't mind being lugged down. For technical riding, I can just put it in 1st gear, and just idle through the rough stuff!

TRX-The suspension was terribly stiff. The owner is my same weight, so the preload was about right for my weight. It was moderately rough very tight trails, and some rough, more open fire roads. I totally getting beat up.......it was way rough. The stock suspension is intended for MX, not trail riding. Plus, you have to deal with that pipey powerband and be slipping the clutch all the time.
