The nut is the clutch adjustment. To check it, hold the bolt in the center of the nut with a screwdriver, using a 14mm wrench, loosen the nut, turn the center screw counter-clockwise until a slight resistance is felt, then turn the screw clockwise 1/4 turn and tughten the jam nut while holding the center screw with the screwdriver.
To adjust the valves, remove the tank, remove the tappet covers, turn the engine to TDC. ( If the exhaust rocker has tention on it, rotate the engine 180 degrees, to TDC again ) valve clearance should .006 in.

TRX 300 question
I think in that last part Gimpster means rotate the crankshaft another 360 degrees, or 180 camshaft degrees. I've found the easiest way to find TDC compression (where you want the engine to be when you adjust valves), is to peck the starter button and verify which direction the engine spins. Turn the engine over slowly that direction and watch the intake rocker or valve open, and then close the intake valve. The very next TDC is compression stroke.
