We bought our Rancher for our daughters. We rented a Rancher for them to ride on the Piaute trails. It was a 2-wd ES. All my daughters drive manual trans vehicles so shifting is not a problem. They liked the ES a lot, so that what I bought them but a 4-wd instead of a 2-wd.
So far we only have 1300 miles on it and have had zero problems, with anything. It does not get the living heck beat out of it and it is not used as a submarine.
Personally, I would rather own a belt than a foot shift ATV. AAAHHHHH, thats hard to say, I don't like belts, but I guess I like a foot shift even less.

This doesn't sound like a ES problem. Due to the shock recieved, I'm gonna guess that there is a short starting that is allowing stray voltage to run through the frame. The excess voltage is playing havoc with your ES shift buttons. Due to the fact that a fuse hasn't blown yet, I would look toward a winch connection getting a way to jump to the frame intermittently. Hope this helps, and hope you recover to ride as you wish.
