CT250R,

Were both failures due to piston skirt breakage?? I was just wondering. I have heard that the 400 has a weak piston in it from the factory, and am curious as to what I need to do to prevent my own 400 from coming apart. Thanks for your help.

As for this topic, true, Honda has built quality atv's in the past, and Polaris has built cruddy atv's in the past, but Honda's reliability is fading some here recently, and Polaris' reputation is growing by leaps and bounds. I'm not one for starting bashing, I just speak what I see. That's not to say that Honda is now trash, or that Polaris is better than Honda as far as reliability goes, but rather to state that Honda is having more problems with their latest electrical shifting and hondamatic tranny than they did in the past. Polaris has made leaps and bounds in the quality control and in the quality of their components in the last few years.
Again, all of this is just my view.

Waylan

And another thing; how ever old Honda's technology is it pretty feekin dependable. i havent replaced 1 SINGLE PART in the 5 YEARS I have owned my 300 FourTrax

Is that the best you can come up with, switch from 2x4 to 4x4???? boy if thats all of the "more advanced" features you have on the polaris your in sorry shape. By the way how advanced is that belt drive system you got. Didn't that Technology come out in the early 50's

I haven't had one Problem with my Polaris in one year of beating the crap out of it, not one. Thank god it's been strong enuff to haul my friends 400 EX out of the woods many a time, it would have been a rather long push for him.

Innovative? You'd better believe it. Why do you think every quad builder now makes an automatic quad with full floorboards? Gee, I wonder? Maybe it's because Polaris has been giving the people what they want, and the other manufacturers see that, and want a piece of the dollar pie.

Polaris has, in the past, had reliability problems, that comes with the innovative territory. But they are as dependable as any other quad now. They easily have the best suspension and the plushest ride out there today. I tried many a quad before I bought mine, and Polaris had everything I wanted and more.

Good post…But why must you insist on bashing other manufactures in your other posts? If another manufacture is not up to par with you, does it make it a piece of junk?

If you are trying to get a rise out of others in the ATV forum, you might be successful. But I believe all you are doing is showing immaturity.

Remember, at the end of the day we all had a good time riding.

Ride and ride often…

Let's not forget Honda built the first ATV. Now who's the real innovator? You lead, follow or get of the way. Polaris is behind Honda for years in sales. If you must know why. Reliability is more important than floorboards.

Honda just puts more $ into advertising than any other two companies put together. I doubt that they will be number 1 for long. From what I've seen with the many people I ride with, Honda isn't any more dependable than anyone else. They do, however, make a decent entry level quad.

Now that I'm thinking about it, on the topic of reliability, in the new 4-Wheel ATV Action, the testers had the pleasure of the clutch going out on the 400EX they were testing against the Raptor. In all the shootouts/tests with a Polaris, never have I seen that happen.

Your move.

Hey quadfather, you keep saying that Polaris is reliable "now". That doesn't even make sense. You have to actually use it, for longer than a year, before you exclaim it is reliable. But I guess you Polaris boys will take whatever you can get.
I have a 1990 Honda 300 FW that has been through hell and back. It's been rolled down mountains and flooded in rivers numerous times. I have really been abusive but it has never let me down. I also have a 1984 TRX 200, and I bet you that thing will still be running long after your current Polaris gives out. Who cares about all the bells and whistles these other companies are putting on their ATV's. It's mostly useless crap that is just there to make you even consider not buying what you should be anyway; a HONDA!!!
Besides, when it all comes down to it, they all go fast, they all go through the mud, and they all do what an ATV is made to do, let us have fun.
Honda simply lets you do it with the same Quad, much longer!

Ya know, I've got a 14 year old Honda, my wife has a 13 year old, they BOTH have the original clutches in them. They're both 2-strokes and have been running without any work done on them for over 4 YEARS! I sold my last Honda 4-stroke after having it for 6 years and guess what? Yep! Never had anything break on it either. Nope, we don't need 4WD, and we don't need an old man's gear like reverse. We thrash them at Glamis, Dumont, Coral Pinks, Florence.. . we ride them hard for days at a time in power-robbing sand and they keep going.
I had a 1985 Honda 350X for several years. Again, it never broke down on me. I sold it and the guy is still riding it without a rebuild.
Floor boards???!!!!! Har! Har! Har! That's junk for a street bike!
I've never had a motorcycle for only one year and then bragged about how reliable it was. You gotta keep them for several before you can do that, sorta like my GMC pickup, it's 12 years old and has over 140,000 miles on it. Original engine and tranny. What a great truck it is. Sorta dependable like a HONDA!!!!!!
Now, go back to the Polaris forum where you belong.

on my 14 year old quad ( really now outdated but runs like new) i just recently replaced the rear end ( my fualt) the front drive shaft ( my fualt once again) and the breaks now i tore the rear end up from when i had it in 2wd ( front drive shaft was broken) and i was spinning my tires in 2nd gear and just tore it all to pieces my fualt not honda's . after 14 years and just now replaceing these parts honda sure is reliable. oh and the breaks that were on it before were the origonal DRUM brakes. Floor board are for sissys that cant keep their feet on the pegs. true 4wd ? who needs it.. more things that can go wrong most of the time my honda has real true 4wd if i had a video camera id show you. big plush seat and suspension sure its nice but who really needs it ( no offence to the people that had realllly bad backs and such cuz i have bad back and knees). and besides we buy the quads that are right for US not because they have more power or cost less we buy them because they are right for us . who are you to judge ?
