Probably an early '80s XR 500 Engine. The RFVC (radial four valve combustion) was the new thing back then. It was the start of the four valve head on their dirt engines and is similar to the late hemi craze of Dodge fame (which is a re-design of the older '50s hemi research). The car/truck hemi is a 2 valve engine, but the Honda "radial" design was supposed to swirl and flow the intake and exhaust more efficiently thereby producing more power and torque. I don't have any idea what the tunability and reliability of the engine was back then.

Try googling a 1983 XR 500. If I remember correctly, both the XR350 and XT500 had dual carbs in that era. I was still riding an XR75 and had no plans for riding one of those beasts. I did think that it was pretty cool to dream about...

ok, the reason i ask is because it is not the original one from the bike i got it off of, that motor had a broken cam, which wallered the head out.

Sounds like the "no cam bearings" fairy just trashed your head. It was typical on the smaller and earlier XR engines (especially the 200). They didn't have cam bearings and the wear shows up as buggered cam journals. That may be why the cam broke in the first place.

Did the early RFVC engines have cam bearings?

Those engines have a cam that rides on ball bearings on BOTH ends.

Only the XR200 and smaller bikes didn't have cam bearings. [except for the XR200 with the RFVC head]
