Default ignition qusetion

I noticed today my netural light was lit up on my 300 fourtrax. The bike had been sitting for a few days and the key was turned off. When i started it i turned the key off and the bike kept running. Is there a short in the ignition or something. Is this common?

never heard of it, but it does sound like your ignition is shot. I've got an extra ignition that fit on my '02 Honda 400 Foreman. PM me if yer interested and i'll find out more details. you can also buy a factory one from Honda but i think you're gonna find that hurts.

Have you got teenagers? Could they have put a jumper in there, to hot wire it? Or it could be the switch is shot, and it is hanging up, and not getting to off.

What year 300 is it?
Most likely the slot for the key isnt the problem, itll be the electrical contacts inside of it.
If its a two wire switch, pull the connectors going to it, and use an ohmeter to check. in one position there should be continuity between the wires and in the other position itll be an open. My guess, is your going to find continuity in both positions.
At that point you can try to repair the contacts inside, or toss it and put in a toggle switch, or buy a new key switch.

easy to find- if the bike doesnt kill by turning the key off, but it kills if you UNPLUG the key switch, then the problem is in the key switch. If it still stays running with the key switch unplugged, then you have a problem somewhere else.

Now today i get on the bike and no power to start it!! I kicked it and ran it for a bit and it charged it up a bit. I am wondering if when i installed my winch the other day i connected right to the battery, both pos and neg. Would this have anything to do with it???
