Default 86 250R clutch

On my R when i apply the clutch and rev the motor the fourwheeler wants to move forward a little bit. It even wants to jump forward when you try to start it in gear with the clutch held in. I have the cable adjusted all the way, and it still does this. The cable is brand new. I am hoping that it is just the clutches. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I have 2 ATC 250r's which essentially have the same motor and both of mine do this and one has a brand new hinson clutch basket and completely new clutch plates. The other just got new springs and clutch plates (this is on my 85 with 86 motor. The hinson clutch basket is in my almost stock 86 R (just mild porting and aftermarket pipe and silencer. Both of my motors do this and the adjustments in the cable don't help resolve this issue at all! Maybe someone else can help with this!

1) There are two places to adjust the clutch (on the lever, and down on the case below the cylinder).
Have you adjusted BOTH of those??

2) Did you soak the clutch plates in oil for a few hours prior to installing them?
If both of these things have been done, then you may just need to wear the plates a little so that they no longer grab, but I'd be looking into those other things, and make sure that the adjustment has been made at both ends, and that it was adjusted in the correct direction.

oh yeah both of my R's were installed properly, and both adjustments have been tried. Both R's have been broken in aand have been used enogh to where grabby pads shouldn't be happening, but yet it still happens. Oh well I just have to remember that these are older bikes and these are quirks that my bikes have.

Get the 89 update kit from Service Honda or have it ordered through your local dealer. You most likely have wear on the lifter rod/ball assembly....

The "ears" on the clutch basket may have grooves in them from pressure from the ears on the plates. If the grooves aren't too bad you can file them down smooth with a dremmel tool. This is what I did with mine a few years ago.

Its most likely the clutch push rod. Like powerslider said, get the 89 update.

This has nothing to do with this forum. I posted a new topic but no one answered. Does anyone know if a cool dome head for my 250 R will help?

It's around 60.00 for the kit, new lifter rod, bearing assy and pressure plate. Pull the lifter rod out with the steel ball on the end when you check your clutch, if the ball is rough it wears the rod shortening it until you run out of clutch adjustment and your clutch drags (sound familiar?) The new kit uses a needle bearing on the end of the lifter rod so it doesn't wear, GET THE KIT!!!!
