400ex Mods
#2
What kind of mods you should do all depends on how you are going to use your bike. If you are going to trail ride you will want a different set of mods than if you were going to Mx, or if your going to primarily ride in sand. Alot of it is opinion, as you will find out in this forum. I love my twist throttle, but some people hate them. I am very happy with my Big Gun exhaust, but some feel that it doesnt have enough top end. I guess what I am trying to say is do alot of research before you buy anything.

Hi,
The first thing you should do is get a 14 tooth front sprocket, makes a huge difference, unless you are worried about the loss of a few mph of top-end speed.
The second thing I purchased for my bike was prm skid plates, well worth the money. I did a little review w/ some pics if you are interested and put them on my site www.exriders.com/skids.shtml.

Sorry to change the subject but...
Sul,
How long will you have to wait for your 400ex?
And, did your dealer have ANY (red) ex's in stock?
Just thought I would ask because I have heard they are hard to find

I live in central VA, and my brother just bought a yellow 400EX of the showroom floor and also we got the guy to come down a couple hundred bucks.
More importantly the salesman claimed that you can get all the 400EX plastic for like $70 dollars red or yellow. He said a guy had just recently bought a red 400EX, but also bought the yellow plastic. If you really want the yellow plastic maybe you can get your dealer to swing you a deal on some yellow plastic.
I think what some of the other posts have stated about what mods depends on what type of riding. If you were going to run a race 400EX, I would have to say you need to get the motor up to speed (mine is in Curtis Sparks shop right now), but also some important chassis mods like a-arms I have denton +2 and am happy enough with them. Also an extended axle. The rear shock isnt too terrible, but the front stockers are terrible. Once the get hot and start to fade your wrists will take a beating. That is why I bought some TCS ZIngs which I really like. They lower the bike and really can take a beating.
I ride with a guy who has an IMS 440 with a race cam and big gunn, which he seems happy with. I am getting a 416 kit in mine, but if you are more interested in trail riding the 440 may be better. My friends has a lot of torque and he pulls some really high gearing with the stock tires I think it might be 15/36. I was running a sparks x-4 exhaust, uni air filter, and ct rev box, with 22" holeshots and 14 tooth frt. sprocket and my bike was always at a much higher rpm than his at the same speed.
If you arent worried about noise I have to say the SParks exhaust really is awesome. We just took my old X-4 and put it on my brother new 400EX and it was awesome. It made a difference that you could feel. It just flows better and with the air filter the throttle response is much better even right off the bottom. My brother and I made sure we got a good impression of the stocker before adding the mods. I have to say that you dont have to worry about spending money to get beat by a stocker. The sparks exhaust is the real deal, and you can get it spark arrested. I honestly think the X-4 makes the bike easier to ride even in the trails and everything.
