I have a 400EX and want to go from the rear stock tire size of 20" to 22" to gain some height for back wood trails. I can get a 22x10x(8, 9 or 10) for the new tires. If I do both trails and sand dunes riding, what would be the best rim size for the job?

Redlin10,

If you are going to do a lot of woods riding, my choice would be with the 10" rim, it will give you more control in hard corners, the 'baloon' feeling you get from small rim/big tire combos can make your back end pretty squirelly. I have even seen sand tire outlets offering 12" rims for paddle tires, looks great, and I'll bet it handles great too.

just my 2 cents.

10" rims are the way to go.

Less side wall.

for sand I would go with the 22x10x10 and in the woods would go with a 22x10x10. The wider the tire the better the traction and you really want tracion in sand but if you like to slide around on dirt then get the skinnier rim. I wouldn't go with 9 because it is a little off in terms of size I doubt seriously that many people have a 9" wide rim. It also depends on the type of tire you plan on getting if you look at them the most popular size seems to be 22x11x8 so you also might want to look around at the sizes of tires you want before you get your rim. This is just my opinion and please correct me I'm wrong about the 9 inch rim.

I agree that the 9" width is odd because most tires are 10-11 inches wide, but the 9" that Redlin10 is not referring to the "width" of the rim - it's the diameter.
1st number - 22 - height of the tire
2nd number - 10 - width of the tire
3rd number - 8,9,10 - diameter of rim (hole in tire)
