Rancher ES shifting problem
#1
Well, since I've found the great sources of info around here, I may as well ask about my buds Rancher problem.
Here's the deal....It's a Rancher ES with the button shifting on the handlebar. What happens is, when you pick a gear and cruise along in that gear for a little ways, after a short distance the gear indicator goes from a solid number to a flashing one. When that happens, you can no longer change the gears up or down, ie. the gear change buttons no longer function. When you turn the bike off and on again, your ability to switch gears returns until you go a little ways farther and then the problem re-occurs.
Also, the speedometer is showing "zero" (0)at all times. I suspect this might in some way have something to do with the problem.
Otherwise, the bike runs fine.
Anybody else ever run into this problem?
And I'm sure it's not the buttons. The shifting works fine till the indicator starts flashing.

Elevin flashes points to the speed sensor system, and that makes sense, if he has no speed on the speedometer.
Thats normal for the buttons to quit working when the system goes into failure mode (flashing gear number).
What year is the rancher?
Check the wire connection at the speed sensor, it may be dirty or loose.

Hi david the pre 2003 ranchers didn't have the code system so you won't be getting any flashes. However if your speedo and shifting start acting up at the same time it surely is the speed sensor I'd be checking out.
