A VERY long time ago, a cycle mag did a 1/4 mile drag race at the drag strip with a CR500 vs Interceptor VF500 street bike, and the CR500 won! Talk about quick, I can see it jumping out in front of the heavier 4-stroke street bike, but it takes brute HP to stay in front for the 1/4 mile, that's plenty time to catch up. I believe the CR500 trapped about 100 mph (top speed) and reached it well before the 1/4 mile mark.

 

Wow. I wonder if a guy could put a cr500 motor in a 450r chassis. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

 

wow, im getting old (29) as some in here have never seen a 500CC open class 2 stroke? wow. Anyway- the best way to describe my 91'CR500R is that it feels like somone blue up a case of TNT behind the bike when you floor it! Seriouly crazy! Top speed is indeed 100MPH+ stock. Dirtbike mag had the 88'CR up to 120MPH (can scan the article if you wish)
Very fun bikes, and it may seem odd but the fastest CR500R were years between 1986 and 1988...all threw the 90's they were mellowing out the engine to make it easyer to ride as if you were on pavement and hit the light switch powerband curve of the 86' it would cause you to loop out and wreck in almost any gear!

Ive always wanted to ride a CR500 as I love machines with alot of torque and I am a fairly big guy. JRM how was the 500 in the woods? Ive been looking at a CR500 with pro circuit pipe I think it is the last year for the 500.

 

I rode mine in the woods until about a year ago when I got my KTM. I am 6'4" 230 lbs and it was a handfull at times. I never found the top speed but mine had one less tooth on the rear sprocket and it saw 90 mph plus a couple times according to my ICO odo.

 

Wow what a jerk. I'm 35 and have been riding since I was 11. Yeah your right I've never seen dirt bike, let alone a cr500, LOL. I was thinking a 500r motor would be wicked in a 450r chassis, and yes that would be wow. In the future I'll keep my thoughts to myself.......Jerk.

 

I had an 86 CR500 and QUICKLY learned for trail riding they are NOT the bike to have LOL. I had that think on the black top in 4th gear going into a curve (hadn't had the bike long) and thought I would shower down on it and pull through the curve... WRONG in 4th gear dropping into a curve at a good 50MPH the bike casually pulled the front end of the ground and walked across the road! LOL

It was a MONSTER. I loved riding it but like I said for tight trails they just are not the bike to have.

Also by the way the early years around where you mentinoed 86- early 90's did not have a compression release. I walked (or limped) around with a black foot the whole time I owned that bike! You catch one of those on compression stroke and it will throw you over the handle bars! LOL
