It is certainly not a performance option.
A K&N is made with cotton gauze. Cotton breaks down in water. You are only supposed to clean them like 25 times before disposal. The prefilter extends cleaning periods because it catches some of the dust. It is NOT to enhance the filtering capabilities of the K&N. You can take that straight from their site.
Don't know about riding in a fine dust but I can vouch K&N works just great in sand.

Duneaddict-As far as trying to SCARE people, I figure this is like the "use a condom" issue. It's best to press the point to hard, and have someone err on the side of being to safe. Then if there are those who want to ignore reality, well the consequences are their own fault.
What made me stop using K&N's a few years ago is that my filters were way to clean. A foam filter in that same desert dust would come home caked, yet the K&N was all nice and pretty. If the dirt wasn't on the filter, well then where did it go except into the intake???
In my mind it's just foolish to think that an Outerwears is going to make a big difference.

A dusty envoronment is same thing as pouring dust onto a filter....no doubt to the same degree, but dust is still in contact with the filter. If a prefilter extends cleaning periods, then how is it not enhanceing the filtering ability?? You agree it catches dust?? Later gents

The stock box helps filter dirt too. Is it NEEDED to enhance the filtering process? No.

Did you actually notice dirt/debris inside your intake tube (after the filter)?
In my opinion, it's absolutely NOT foolish to think an Outerwear makes a difference, I've seen it time and time again.
Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I've always wanted to pilot a top fuel dragster or an F-16 to see if I could find enough.
It kinda goes along with that one song:
A girl too pretty, Too much money in your pocket, Too much whiskey (Well, I think I've found the threshold on that one)
