well when i change my oil on my 400 i drain all the oil out of the oil tank then drain it out of the motor bolt on the side, then unbolt the oil filter change it out bolt it back on but the bolt back in the side of the motor and the one in the oil tank fill it up till it shows then start it for about 10 seconds turn it off and check it again and add till it shows. and then it usually stays about right. hope this helps

Wreckless said it all pretty well. The oil tank will take a little less than 2 quarts. When you start the engine the first time, the oil level will go way down as it fills the oil cooler, crankcase, and oil filter. I start the engine, ride it around slowly for a minute or two to be sure the oil gets distributed throughout the transmission, then I stop it and top the oil level back up.

Do a search, and you will find lots of posts on what are the better oils.

The modern oils are all compatible. I highly recommend an ester synthetics over any petroleum oil or PAO synthetic.

Just as long as it is an approved motorcyce oil it will be fine. I used to run normal motor oil, while nothing ever failed, it did shift a little rougher so I swithced to motorcycle oil.

I've got a question concerning 400ex oil. Rather than making a new thread, I thought post it an old one...

What kind of oil should I use? Should I use 5W30? 10w30?

See this post, and your owners manual: http://forums.atvconnection.com/mess...ighlight_key=y

I would use: 5W30 for very cold winters, 10W40 for in between, and 15 or 20W50 for very hot summers.

Again, I highly recommend Maxima Extra!

some notes on oil:

yeah, ive always ran 5w-30 in winter, and i run premium too (regular ran like crap). though i should have rejetted... the temperatures range from 35F to -30F (though i havent rode in anything below -20F yet). i run 10w-40 in the summer (anywhere from 50F to 75F usually).

and make you you DONT OVERTIGHTEN YOUR OIL FITLER SCREWS. those things are small and will break easily. one of mine broke off 2 winters ago and i duct-taped the cap to make sure it wouldnt fall off.

Well, I bought 2 quarts of pennzoil 10w40 today. Also, I picked up an oil filter at Canadian Tire. This is gonna rock!
