I stopped running a-arm guards on all my quads years ago and I ride in rocky terrain all the time. Haven't damage one yet. The upside is it is a whole lot easier to keep the quad clean. I admit that part of my decision was that a stock lower a-arm for the 400ex costs $39 from Service Honda.

For a swingarm skidplate, the only one I managed to keep together is a Pro-Tect stainless steel. I will admit that I had a lot of the aluminum skid plates from 3-4 years ago. Many of the newer ones seem to be built better - even using 3/8" aluminum in key areas.

I too ran a-arm guards for a while, but found them unnecessary. Just added extra weight to the front of the machine, where it does the most harm.

I use DG Baja aluminum fill chassis and swingarm skids. DG also has a new stainless steel series. They are supposed to be thiner and lighter, but give the same protection as aluminum. If I ever have to replace anything, I might go that route next time.

A bumper is an important part of your protection as well. I would check out the IMS/Roll Intimidator, Off-Road Bumper (not the MX). http://www.imsproducts.com/

I run full Ricochet skids and arm guards on both my machines. With a lot of trailriding, I've seen a lot of sticks come up and puncture those boots. I don't feel they are too heavy.
