i pulled a really stupid move and flung the chain on my 03 400ex into where the motor and the cover meet. i've got the cover and motor fixed and ready to put back together, but i was wondering if i use any type of gasket sealer on either the starter gasket, or the engine cover gasket.

If the surfaces are clean, and you have a new gasket, it should seal. You can use Honda-bond or my favorite Yamabond to stick the gasket in place.
