Heat the spring evenly with a torch and it will lose temper and soften up. Take the shock off first . Take the spring off if possibble. I don't think you can on a rancher though. Try to direct the heat away from the main part of the shock and just on the spring.
I would start at the bottom and heat it up about 2 inches up. Put it back in and see if its soft enough. If not heat a few more inches up. You can't get the temper back once it's gone. If you don't heat evenly you may cause a soft spot to form and the spring will break.
I wouldn't try it though. I would just buy a softer shock off a sport quad the same length.
Also bigger tires with low air pressure will soften it up too.
