Eh, you cant really compare dirtbikes and streetbikes. They are totally different animals.
Ive owned quite a few streetbikes, including an R1. (and currently own a KX500) Although the CR/KX 500's are completely wicked, they make quick, snappy power and torque and rev to the top almoast instantly.
A bike like an R1 is smooth yet extremely powerful, and goes 20-30MPH faster at redline in FIRST GEAR than the CR/KX 500's go tapped out in 5th.
Because they are such different beasts, I really wouldnt associate one with the other.. ever.
That being said, there really isnt a 4 stroke that compares to a CR/KX500.

114 on the limiter in second,
13x limiter in third, ect. I have onboard video if anyone needs more convincing. (a video of myself on the R1 downshifting to second at about 80MPH, then on up through the gears into 6th and 166MPH, a weak run, to be sure)
My current Honda RVT1000R (RC51) will do between 70-75 in first, 102 in second, ect.
Most 600's will do 65ish tapped out in first.

There is no comparison between the 2 stroke and the 4 stroke. The 2 stroke will win every time.
Look at moto-cross today. 4 strokes of double the cc's are allowed to compete against the smaller 2 strokes. And they (the 4 strokes) just barely beat the 2 strokes.
Why do you think they have had 4 stroke only moto-cross champoinships? It's because the 4 strokes can not compete on even ground.
The only reason you see all the 4 stroke moto-cross bikes is because of AMA legislation and the manufactures desire to sell more expensive bikes that required more expensive maintanance.
The next time you ponder this question think about who you bet on in a race, a 2 stroke 250R or the 4 stroke recon 250.
