Default yz426 vs cr500

LOL, guess we are going to continue this all over the forums.

Im pretty sure the 500's were about 50hp stock, maybe those weren't the 85' you mention. Im almost positive the later 500's were only(as if that isn't a lot) 50hp. I'll research it tho when I get some free time here.

I hate using mags as a reference, but I know a LOT of mags that talk about the current 450's dam near putting out the power of the 500's. Again, I don't like referencing mags, but it was one more thing that comes to mind.

And it only took a few million dollars of developement to make it happen too. CR500's are animalistic creatures, there is a reason they are extinct. Only about 7 people in the world could use its full power potential. Im not one of them.

Oh know, not you to!

I know you know a HE!! of a lot more than me about dirtbikes. But I still stand by what I said, Peak HP is about the same. Now the 500 comes on much more abruptly(spelling?), and Im sure not many men can actually handle it, but I still say peak hp. numbers are within 5hp or less. Stock vs. stock that is.

Just so you guys know, Im not arguing that the 500 is not more of an animal than a 450

Also, I don't know if you guys have road one, but 450's are a lot of bike to, I know I can't use all there power on a track. My 250 2-smoke feels a little weak compared to them.

Sorry M26, 50hp was a conservative # and 45 for the 450s is optomistic.

The only advantage that the 450 rider has is that he wont get near as tired riding it. That wont have much of a effect in a drag race though. Back in the mid 80's one of the dirt bike mags did a 1/4 mile face off between the 500cc honda crotch rocket and cr500. The cr had to be regeared but it smoked it. High 11's or low 12's if I remember right.

Ok, I'll try and find some dyno's to link after my lunch, but I found a few and a 03' stock 450 is peaking at about 47-48 hp (current bikes are a little more powerful), and a stock late 90's 500 is putting out around 53-54. A couple more HP gap than I thought, but still not THAT much difference. I'll try and link some in a couple hours.

M26, think about this for a moment.

If it took a 450cc thumper to beat a 250cc 2 stroke. Your going to need a 900cc thumper to beat a 500cc 2 stroke. See how simple it is?

I know... I know, I figured that point would come up. It may come on a lot harder, I never said a 500 would lose in a drag or anything, my only point is the peak HP isn't that different. I don't understand why that is so hard to believe considering the 450's have a lot more technology in them. Imagine if they put that time in a 2-smoke!.

Look at quads, a stock yfz450 vs. a quadzilla in a drag is fairly close, neither one is going to kill the other. There's a 450 thumper vs a 500 smoker, how do you explain that? Technology man, Im sure if some company that put R&D money into a 500 smoker it would really rip a 450 a new one.

think about the true numbers. (hello by the way,... I am new!
450's are squeazed pretty well from the factory whereas, as aforementioned by other members, the 500 was detuned, throw a pipe, filter, and jetting on both, and see what happens.... my uncle has a gorgeous cr500 moto in his trx250r.... the thing is a friggin' sand excavator. incredible torque, neck snapping power delivery, and an endless topend (on the sand, on a quad) just piping the 500 will give you over 70 hp. whereas isn't that what the 727 trinity raptor put out? they are both unreliable, so i see them as a good comparison.

Codeman, I agree with you and never said a CR500 wasn't choked up stock for stock. I never said anything mod for mod, all my point has been since the begining is that a CR500 STOCK isn't putting out THAT much more HP than a 450 MX bike. That has been my only argument, you guys think Im saying a 450 is going to beat a 500 in a drag or something.

And like you said a 450 is pretty high strung from the factory, imagine if they did that to a modern day 2-stroke. The nice thing about the 4-stroke MX bikes is that they really need no mods to win races from the showroom floor besides personal settings. I would like to see a few quads come with race ready components like the bikes do, like bars, gripper seat, aluminum bolt-ons, etc.

I seriously doubt the 450 would hang as they approached 4th/5th gear. The LT500 (51 HP) and Banshee (the 48 HP '80s model ) were close until about 3rd gear, then the 500 started walking away----fast. Regardless, it wouldn't take much to get massive HP out of the LT500, not so easy and way more expensive for the 450.

As for the CR500, it is an absolute killer and nicely modded, would be hard to touch in a drag by anything, let alone a mere 426 4-puke.
