Elka vs Works Shocks for 300EX('04)
#1
Well,
I'm gonna spring for the boy again. His stock suspension just rots. I'm starting with the rear and want adjustable preload, compression and rebound. Dual and triple rate is not that important to me. It looks like there is less than $100 difference between Works and Elkas. Iwas told by Elka NOT to use a 400Ex shocK because the geometry is different. The Elka also provides a little over 1" more travel than stock and I don't believe the Works does.
Anyone have experience with either? It seems to be an obvious choice but lets see what the opinions are.
Thanks

I put a 2001 Raptor rear shock on my son's 300ex, it has a rez, and is adjustable, watch ebay or swap meets, you can get one pretty reasonable, it is far better than stock, and gives another inch or so of travel. It has to be a 2001, the other years have a piggyback rez, and will not fit, and you will need to put a longer hose on to mount it to the frame, but it works great. On the front, I put 400ex a arms and shocks, cheap off ebay,or find someone who has modded their 400ex, and has spare parts. Either get a top shock mount kit for the 400ex suspension swap to a 300ex, or cut and reweld the old ones. This does 2 things, gives you almost double the front travel, and makes the front end a couple of inches wider, corners and handles better, and jumps are a lot softer. The only other thing you will need is 400ex tie rods, even new ones, like from Planet Honda, are cheap, like 15 bucks for a pair. I also put 1" spacers on the rear to match the front and back tires. That and 20" rear Fast Trekkers, and it corners tight, and soaks up stutter bumps and long jumps like the big quads. For the cost of one rear Works or Elka shock, you can do the entire front and back suspension with 400ex / Raptor parts, and greatly increase the ride and comfort of the 300ex. He's raced it several times, pounded the snot out of it, and it has held up great, the mods have been on for almost 2 years, with zero problems.

Thanks for that very informative reply. I have read that the raptor shock would work but your detail was better. I was able to find on and have it ordered. I'll play with the front after I see how it is with the rear shock changed out. Should be here within a week and off we'll go.
