400ex clutch problem
#1
Hi Everyone,
My 400ex has been in storage for 4 months. Today I got it out and the clutch handle would not move. The handle and cable are fine but would not engage at the engine (sorry, I'm not a mechanic). I started it and after 15mins of warming up the clutch would engage but was difficult. I'll take it to the shop for repairs but I'm wondering what would make it do this. I put it in storage all the time and have never had this problem. Thanks.

My brothers 400ex clutch is gettin stiff. The plastic part of the cable is a little melted by the exhaust. Maybe when you warmed it up it softened the plastic and let it move. Cable is not hard to change. Keep it lubricated when you get it back, especially if you ride in mud and water. Loosen up clutch adjustment, pull cable out of handle then use that little red tube on your wd-40 to squirt a ton down the clutch cable. And obviously try to keep it away from the exhaust.

When you let them sit for a long period of time the clutch plates will stick together. There are 2 cures for this problem later. Let the engine run for some time like you did and then ride it and it should be OK. Or, you can go inside and replace the clutch if it doesn't seem to work good afteror during the test ride. How to stop it before hand, not sure. I would get itback from the dealer if it worked during the ride. All that he will do is replace the clutch for $$$.
